Offshoring is a practice of basing some of a company’s processes or services overseas, so as to take advantage of lower costs. This practice is usually performed by companies from industrialized countries to less-developed countries, with the intention of reducing the cost of doing business, including cost of labor, cost of living and more favorable tax conditions.
Initially companies focused their outsourcing efforts on low-skilled/unskilled manufacturing jobs and simple assembly tasks. However, with the advancement in telecommunications, road/network infrastructure and increasing educational levels, many developing countries are now able to provide sophisticated and highly educated labor, making it attractive to locate or expand operations.
Nearshoring is offshoring but to a location more nearby the country from which the work was originally located.
